Holocaust Supremacism Cleverly Disguised By a Rhetoric of Universalist Language: A Self-Appointed "Gateway" Genocide; Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization (Cultural Memory in the Present) 1st Edition by Michael Rothberg

jan peczkis|Friday, December 22, 2017

This book is a thinly-veiled Jewish attempt to mend fences with African-Americans after the criticisms, by some African-American leaders, of the preeminence of the Jews’ Holocaust over black slavery in the USA. It consists of the standard Judeocentric memes

Consider what often has been called victim competition and even victimhood Olympics. Author Michael Rothberg would have the reader believe that this need not be so. He writes, “Against the framework that understands collective memory as COMPETITIVE memory—as a zero-sum struggle over scarce resources—I suggest that we consider memory as MULTIDIRECTIONAL: as subject to ongoing negotiation, cross-referencing, and borrowing: as productive and not private.” (p. 3; Emphasis in original).

THE SO-CALLED MULTIDIRECTIONALITY OF THE HOLOCAUST: A MULTIPLY-DISENGENUOUS CONSTRUCT

They may sound appealing, but Rothberg’s statements are an exercise in Holocaustspeak. They, first of all, confuse the issue, which is not the parallels between the Holocaust and other genocides, but the fact that the Jews’ Holocaust gets 95% of the attention while all other genocides have to collectively settle for the remaining 5%. [See first-posted comment under this review.] These are two entirely separate issues.

The subterfuge of the so-called multidirectionality of the Holocaust is a little sneaky, and quite Orwellian. It transforms the Holocaust into a privileged, unelected “gateway” genocide or “reference” genocide through which all other genocides must pass, or to which they must all pay obeisance, if they are to be heard at all. In other words, the so-called multidirectionality of the Holocaust does not eliminate Holocaust supremacism: It only reinforces it. For instance, whenever we hear about the black Holocaust, the Gypsy Holocaust, the gay Holocaust, or the Polonocaust, we are tacitly paying tribute to the Jews’ Holocaust as THE most important genocide, and we are tacitly affirming that the only way for non-Jewish genocides to be recognized at all is through the Jews’ Holocaust.

Moreover, even if the mystification of the Holocaust, and the notion of Holocaust supremacism, are not formally promoted, they nevertheless have very much taken control of the minds of the general public. Using other words, Rothberg recognizes as much, as he quips, “Along with its ‘centering’ in public consciousness in the last decades, the Holocaust has come to be understood in public imagination, especially in Europe, Israel, and North America, as a unique, sui generis event.” (p. 8).No kidding. But Rothberg does not answer the obvious question: In view of these facts, how could the public NOT be under the strong impression that the Jews’ Holocaust is above the genocides of all other peoples?

THE SO-CALLED MULTIDIRECTIONALITY OF THE HOLOCAUST: A DOUBLE STANDARD

Finally, Rothberg’s consideration, of what he calls the multidirectionality of the Holocaust, is not even internally consistent. It is disingenuous. Jewish authors have no problem with the African and African-American experiences being juxtaposed with the Shoah, as is done extensively in this book, but various Jewish spokesmen get all exorcised whenever the Poles’ genocide under Nazi Germany [yes, the Polonocaust happened] is even mentioned in the same sentence!

DILUTING THE GUILT OF NAZI GERMANY. SOFTNESS ON COMMUNISM

This book has other problems. Rothberg (p. 228) mentions some individuals who found parallels between Nazi German conduct and that of France towards its colony Algeria. Rothberg fails to inform the reader that this is an old Nazi German exculpatory trick. Klaus Barbie, the onetime Gestapo chief of Lyon, said that his torturing of French captives, in Gestapo dungeons, was no different from the French tortures of Algerian nationalist captives. It is the same old song and dance. At the earlier Nuremberg trials, the Nazi defendants said that their conduct should be excused because, after all, it was on the same level as the British concentration camps in the Boer War, and no different from the American treatment of the Indians.

Significantly, this book, along with many others nowadays, indexes Communism with a lower-case “c”. (p. 368). This has the Orwellian effect, if not intent, of minimizing the crimes of Communism, which included the genocidal murders of millions more victims than the Nazis.

POSTSCRIPT

Perhaps one day Holocaust supremacism (whatever its disguises) will be recognized for what it is—a form of racism—and condemned accordingly.

HOLOCAUST SUPREMACISM IN LEADING ENGLISH-LANGUAGE NEWSPAPERS

[In Canada, UK, and the USA. Based on search of the PROQUEST NEWSTAND database, covering July 3, 2007—July 3, 2017. Using these respective keyword combinations: (Roma or Romani or Sinti or Gypsy or Gypsies) genocide; (“Great Famine” and Ukraine) or Holodomor; Armenian Genocide; “Holocaust” or Shoah]:

NOTE: The virtual monopoly of Jews and the Holocaust is even more severe than appears from the table above. This, in the case of the Canadian newspapers, owes to the skewing effects of the large numbers of politically-active Ukrainian-Canadians in Canada. In other English-speaking nations, where Ukrainians are uncommon, the Holodomor barely registers.

As for the Armenian genocide [Aghet], it got a “bump” of publicity surrounding the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide (2015) and the ongoing Turkish-counterclaim controversy. Even so, it has gotten a paltry fraction of the recognition of the Holocaust.
