Author Yitzhak Laor has been lauded as one of Israel’s most prominent dissidents and poets. Much of his work focuses on what he considers the injustices of Israel against the Palestinians. There is even censorship in action. For example, Laor comments, “In today’s Israel, it is not that easy to research the atrocities committed by Israeli soldiers in the war of 1948. This Hungarian-based work, now in the English language, provides interesting perspectives on the PHARRAJIMOS (PORAJMOS), the Nazi-German genocide of the Sinti and Roma peoples during WWII. Editors Barsony and Daroczi belong to one of the original organizers of the Romany civil rights movement in Hungary. One striking feature of this work, which I emphasize in this review, is the recycling of old arguments to justify the supremacy of the Shoah over all other genocides, this time against the Gypsies. This gloomy movie is more than the story of IDA—a prospective Catholic nun who learns that she is of Jewish background. It is also a vehicle for reinforcing pro-Jewish stereotypes about Poles. And I thought that Hollywood (and other western-based film-making outlets) are supposed to be careful about not perpetuating stereotypes. This book touches on many different aspects of victimhood. My review focuses exclusively on the Holocaust.

The author has much to say about German guilt after the Shoah. Perhaps without intending to, she draws attention to the stereotype of Jews being vindictive, as well as the reasoning behind the premise that Jews have been soft-peddling German guilt, and commonly shifting the blame for the Holocaust to Christianity and to Poles, because they had been paid off by the Germans. All this started with the Israeli-German Luxemburg Agreement of 1952. Some commentators have described Dzierzhinsky as a Judaized Pole. How accurate is this?

Leggett describes how Dzerzhinsky grew up in Vilna [Wilno, Vilnius], which he describes as a cosmopolitan city with a strong Jewish element and a focal point of socialist ferment in Tsarist Russia. (p. 34). He adds that, “Dzerzhinsky came under the influence of Martov, future leader of the Menshevik Party, by whom he was introduced into Jewish circles, both proletarian and of the intelligentsia; he made many Jewish friends and zealously learned Yiddish. The Bund—Jewish social democratic workers’ organization in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia, founded in 1897—helped Dzerzhinsky in his political activity, for instance in late 1899. The double standard is systematic. It appears not only in the Talmud, but in other rabbinical literature. By way of introduction, author Steven D. Fraade, Mark Taper Professor of the History of Judaism at Yale University, writes, “There the context is the interpretation of the mishnaic rule (BABA QAMMA 4:3) that an Israelite is not culpable if his ox gores the ox of a gentile, whereas a gentile whose ox gores that of an Israelite must pay full damages regardless whether or not the gentile’s ox was a habitual gorer.” (p. 52). >>more...
