Poland--old and new

Thursday, November 24, 2011
This book begins with a good description of Polish tales, such as the ones surrounding the Krak, Wanda, Popiel, etc. It affords a broad sweep of Polish history.

Consider the late 1700's. Although Poland's enemies were soon to erase her from the map of Europe, the Poles put belated major internal reforms into practice. Did you know, for instance, that the Poles virtually invented systematic public schooling? The author writes: "The first ministry of public education in the world was created in Poland in 1773." The Wartime Diary of Edmund Kessler (Jews of Poland)

Thursday, November 24, 2011
This review is from: The Wartime Diary of Edmund Kessler (Jews of Poland) (Paperback) This book consists of two parts: The diary and poetry of Edmund Kessler, who was one of the fugitive Jews in hiding, and the narrative of Kazimierz Kalwinski, the son of the Pole who hid the 24 Jews in his bunker. (p. 110). This work centers on Lwow (Lviv), and encompasses the Soviet, Nazi, and renewed Soviet occupations. WARNING: The cruelties of the Germans and Ukrainians towards the Jews are described in graphic detail--even by Holocaust-material standards. This may be upsetting to sensitive readers >>more...

ROMAN DMOWSKI: PERSONAGE, POLE, AND FRIEND is the title of this Polish-language book. It was published by Chicago-area members of the SN (STRONNICTWO NARODOWE), including Antoni Wawro. [I knew his son, in my childhood, from Saturday-morning Polish School and from the ZUCHY (Polish Scouts)]. Apart from the main text, the book includes an assortment of short articles, some reprinted from other sources, about Dmowski. It also features considerable detail about Dmowski's declining health, death, and funeral. Several eulogies are published. >>more...

Jewish separatism and human progress

Thursday, November 10, 2011
SEPARATYZM ZYDOW...(JEWISH SEPARATISM...) is the title of this Polish-language booklet. Originally published as an article in a Warsaw publication in 1909, it came out before the intensification of Polish-Jewish conflicts caused by the 1912 Jewish vote for a pro-Russian candidate to the Duma (Russian parliament), which amounted to a direct attack on Polish national aspirations, and which provoked the Dmowski-led retaliatory boycott of Jews. >>more...

Ignorancja Czy Arogancja Ludwika Stommy o Handlu Złotymi Zębami w Sachsenhausen

Tuesday, November 8, 2011
>>more...

A Survey of Jewish History in Poland. Understanding Judeopolonia, etc., This review is from: Zydzi w dziejach Polski (Polish Edition) JEWS IN THE DEALINGS OF POLAND is the title of this Polish language book. It starts with the beginnings of the Jewish religion (JEPD hypothesis) and ends with the Solidarity Movement. This book cites a large number of obscure sources. This means that the author brings to light a good deal of information that would otherwise be generally unknown, but also means that it is difficult to check most of his sources. Although Wysocki is often critical of Jews, he is even-handed in blaming both Polish and Jewish nationalists for the negative aspects of pre-WWII Polish-Jewish relations. (p. 116). >>more...

Gold Teeth as Nazi Non-Bullion Gold

Monday, October 31, 2011
During WWII  the German civilian camp system held eighteen million inmates of which over five million were Jews. In the perspective of human suffering one should note that the number of 3.5 million Soviet prisoners of war starved to death was larger than the number of 3.06 million Jews murdered in the Nazi gas chambers in the extermination camps. An additional 1.2 million Jews were killed by the Einsatzgrupen  (Atrocity Troups) and one half of a million Jews were killed in each in the main concentration camps, or died in the ghettos including those who were killed during transport. The Jewish victims were a part of the 25 million non-combat civilians killed during WWII.

The Ruthenian (Ukrainan)Question In Galicia

Friday, October 28, 2011
This short book (review based on original 1919 edition) is packed with information. The data is from Austrian sources. These indicate that 59% of the population of Eastern Galicia was Ruthenian (Ukrainian), and that Polish majorities existed not only in Lwow and other cities, but also in many large enclaves north of the Dniester (Dnister) River, especially in the Tarnopol (Ternopil) area. (pp. 3-5). >>more...

bloody harvests

BLOODY HARVESTS BEYOND THE STYR, HORYN, AND SLUCZ RIVERS is the title of this Polish-language book (Review based on 2nd edition, 2004). It describes the unfolding WWII Ukrainian fascist-separatist OUN-UPA genocide of Poles under the German-Nazi occupation, and how the Poles defended themselves against the Ukrainian REZUNY (cutthroats). Stepanska Huta, the largest Polish defended village in Wolyn that eventually failed, is recounted in considerable detail. This book includes a comprehensive historical narrative, maps (including UPA battle plans), personal testimonies, a profusion of photos, etc. >>more...

Frontline: Shtetl

Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Marian Marzynski has produced a long and tedious film that not only exhibits a pronounced Polonoophobic slant, but fails to inform the viewer about the proper context of the tragic events that took place. A much better and objective source of information about Shtetl life, in my opinion, is the book SHTETL, by Eva Hoffman >>more...
