This work is simultaneously published in Polish, English, and Hebrew. It contains a moving tribute to Poland's Nazi-German-murdered Jews. Ironic to many modern Jews who are put off by Poland as a graveyard for Jews, Tuwim was not. Jak wiadomo w religijnej tradycji żydowskiej, Żydówka zawsze rodzi Żyda, bez względu na tożsamość ojca. Nieraz miało to zły wpływ na moralność, tak, że wielu Żydów, którzy pochodzą z ziem słowińskich ma geny Słowian. Podobnie jak Niemcy, zwłaszcza w Bawarii maję turkmeńskie geny Awarów, którzy po klęsce w walkach przeciwko Słowianom uciekli pod opiekę króla Franków i założyli marchię pod nazwą „Awaria.” Słowo to z czasem zostało zmienione na „Bawaria.” Mimo tego za przykładem Żydów, Niemcy chełpili się wyższością rasową, zwłaszcza nad Słowianami. >>more...

Whether or not one agrees with everything he says, one can feel enlightened and uplifted by Sherwin's refreshingly-different and generally-balanced analysis of Polish Jewry and Polish-Jewish relations. He writes: "Indeed, the contemporary view of Poland as a land endemically inhospitable to Jews runs sharply counter to much of historical experience." (p. 55). And, it turns out, contrary to the claims of Jan Thomas Gross, far from all Poles attempted to erase all memories of Jews: "The Jews of Makow are gone...The cemetery was destroyed by the Nazis. The tombstones were used for construction. Remnants of these tombstones still pave parts of the road near the bus depot. After the war, the Poles of Makow salvaged what they could of the shattered tombstones and built a monument to the Jews of Makow." (p. 76). >>more...

Krall's interview with Marek Edelman begins with how Poles and Jews have ignored each other's situation since WWII. However, she creates a symmetry that never existed. Polish books were never as strongly Polonocentric as Jewish books are Judeocentric. For example, history books written under Communism did individualize the Jews as victims, not merely "Polish citizens". On the other hand, Polish suffering is invisible in the vast majority of educational and popular Holocaust materials. [Perhaps the real objection is the fact that Polish books did not promote the notion that Jewish suffering was special, and above that of other peoples.

This work examines, and soundly debunks, the claim of James Bacque, who had asserted in his OTHER LOSSES, that the Allies under Eisenhower deliberately starved 800,000--1,000,000 captured German POWs. However, this scholarly work is valuable not only in the refutation of the methodology used by Bacque in his book (and subsequent ones), but also in understanding the fallacious argumentation used by other forms of pro-German revisionism (such as that which insists that 2 million Germans perished during the expulsions from post-WWII Poland). >>more...

The British author is generally well informed about Poland's history and sufferings during WWII. Did you realize that 38% of Poland's fixed assets were destroyed in the war and ensuing German occupation? (p. 110). Also, not only large numbers of Jews but also large numbers of Poles were murdered during the German conquest and occupation of Poland. While discussing the Polish aid to fugitive Jews, Woods includes mention of the hamlet of Osiny, where the Poles took turns hiding a Jewish girl so that everyone would be guilty, and the Germans would thereby not be able to play one Pole against another in terms of denunciation.
